- Raggedy Ann was created by Jonny Gruelle for his daughter Marcella, in 1915.
- Her name is a combination of two of the poems of renowned American children’s poet, James Whitcomb Riley: “The Raggedy Man” & “Little Orphan Annie”.
- Marcella died at age 13 after being vaccinated at school for smallpox, without her parents’ consent.
- The Raggedy Ann doll was susequently used as a symbol of the anti-vaccination movement.
