Balloon FAQs

Got a question about buying a balloon? You’ll find answers to the most common questions below. If there’s anything we haven’t covered, email us or call us on 02 9906 6135.

Will you inflate my own balloons if I bring them in?

It depends on the type of balloon.

🎈 Latex balloons – Sorry, no. We only inflate the latex balloons we supply, due to quality and safety concerns (see below).

🎈 Foil balloons where we stock the same one instore – Sorry, no. If we stock the exact same foil balloon, we'll ask that you purchase it from us instead. After all, you wouldn't take your own steak to a restaurant and ask the chef to cook it! 😉

🎈 Foil balloons we don't stock instore – Yes, absolutely.  We're happy to inflate them for a 20% handling & assembly fee (think of it as corkage for balloons!).  Please note that while we'll take every care, we can't accept responsibility if customer-supplied balloons are faulty or pop during inflation.

Why won't you inflate latex balloons I bring from home?

Because not all latex balloons are created equal…

Apart from the variable quality of some cheaper balloons (thinner latex, inconsistent sizing, shorter float times plus a higher risk of popping), there are also important safety considerations.

Independent testing has found some latex balloons sold through online marketplaces & retail channels have exceeded legal safety limits for nitrosamines & related substances. Nitrosamines are chemical compounds classified as probable human carcinogens, which is why strict international safety standards limit the amount permitted in latex balloons.

At Fancy That, we source our balloons from reputable manufacturers who test their products to recognised international safety standards.  We simply can't verify the quality, safety or compliance of customer-supplied latex balloons, so we only inflate the balloons we supply ourselves.

FUN FACT:  In May 2026, the European Commission fined Temu €200 million for failing to adequately manage the risk of illegal and unsafe products being sold on its platform.  Where you shop matters.

Independent testing at a glance:

  • 2022 – Altroconsumo (Italy): Tested 12 latex balloon brands. 7 exceeded EU legal limits for nitrosamines and related substances.
  • 2023 – Hong Kong Consumer Council: Tested 19 latex balloon products. Nearly 70% failed EU toy safety requirements for nitrosamines and related substances.
  • 2023 – SGS: Confirmed the Hong Kong Consumer Council findings, reporting that almost 70% of tested latex balloons failed relevant EU chemical safety standards.
  • 2025 – Which? (UK): Tested 21 packs of latex balloons. 8 failed UK legal safety limits, with one balloon containing more than six times the permitted level of nitrosamines.

Do you rent helium?

No.  We offer full service, instore inflation.  People have died from helium inhalation.  We take this responsibility pretty seriously.  Plus, we've been trained to produce beautiful work for you, saving you time & hassle.

How Soon Should I Order?

We do accept walk-ins during opening hours however be mindful it can get pretty busy sometimes, especially on Saturdays. If you have a larger job requiring delivery, it's helpful to contact us at least a week beforehand, preferably two, so we can ensure stock availability & delivery slots.

But won't my balloons deflate if I pick them up from you before my event?

Foil balloons generally remain taut & fully inflated for 5 - 7 days, bubbles for 2-4 weeks & we apply a special coating inside latex balloons in bouquets which extends their float time to approx. 2-3 days (from the standard 18 - 24 hours), so collecting a day before your event is no problem.

How many balloons will fit in my car?

Most people can fit at least 50-60 x standard 28cm balloons in an empty vehicle. We pack all balloons into transport bags for you. Try & clear out space & bring as few passengers as possible with you for pick-up (preferably none)...

How many balloons will I need to cover my ceiling?

Here's a general rule of thumb:

  • It takes x 9 standard 28cm balloons to completely fill a square metre
  • For medium density, opt for x6 balloons per square metre
  • For sparse, opt for x3 balloons per square metre
  • So all you need to do is multiple the length x width of the space you wish to cover, then multiply by 9, 6 or 3
  • Eg a standard 5 x 4m living area = 20 square metres. Full density is 20x9=180 balloons; medium is 20x6 = 120 balloons, & sparse is 20x3 = 60 balloons.

Now you know!

Will you supply helium balloons for a balloon release?

That's a hard NO.

Releasing any type of lantern or balloon product into the air is littering, plain & simple.  Latex balloons are a natural product, not plastic & they will compost eventually however this takes time.  There are so many ways to enjoy balloons that are environmentally responsible.  We are a member of PEBA - the Pro Environment Balloon Alliance. We will not supply helium balloons for balloon releases.  Ever.  Nor will any other professional, responsible, ethical balloon business.
